Ray Winstone, the tough-as-nails British actor known for his roles in films like Scum and Quadrophenia back in ’79, was heavily influenced by the movies he watched with his dad at the local cinema on Wednesday afternoons.
He made a brief appearance in the 1974 film Stardust, sporting a white jacket and only appearing for a day. He also starred in the TV series Ghostbusters of East Finchley in ’95, which had nothing to do with the blockbuster movie of the same name.
In 2002, he turned down the role of Jimmy McNulty in The Wire because he didn’t want to leave his family and move to Baltimore. The role went to Dominic West instead.
Winstone’s family moved to Enfield when he was seven, where they ran a fruit and veggie business. He attended Portway Infants, Brimsdown Primary School, and Edmonton County School before studying acting at the Corona School.
Despite declaring bankruptcy twice (yikes!), Winstone has bounced back and is currently learning to ride a horse. He’s also a die-hard fan of West Ham United Football Club and even appeared in their 2017 documentary Iron Men.
